Anyone on their hunt for a credit card in Australia inevitably crosses paths with the Amex Platinum Card, yet is it still worth the hype after the massive new lounge changes and price hike?

Well, as a points hacking newbie determined to build a life of business class flights and airport relaxation, I thought it was the perfect time to put it to the test. After all, all of the ‘red-flag’ changes to the card were looking pretty green to me.

In this brutally honest review, I’m running the real math on the hefty $1,450 fee, sharing my personal experience from online benefits to real-life usage, to hopefully help you decide if The American Express Platinum Card is a genuine travel upgrade or an overrated traveller trap.

Platinum personal vs business

Yes, these are 2 different cards, so make sure you apply for the one that best suits.
The Amex Platinum Personal Card is designed for individual spending and travel perks, while the Platinum Business Card offers business-focused benefits, expense management tools and rewards tailored to business owners.

Why I Finally Got the Australian Amex Platinum

Who Am I and why does it matter?

I am a true nobody in the world of points and credit cards, but that is exactly why I wanted to write this review.

Despite being a full-time travel creator for over a decade, I never wrapped my head around the points hacking game and felt it was about time to catch up. I may be the only travel blogger to never fly business class (at least at the time of writing this, because I haven’t put my bonus points to go use YET! stay tuned haha)

I’d had so many big travel creators and frequent travellers swear by this card as ‘points hacking experts’, so I wanted to know what the fuss was really about for someone still relatively new and naive to the world. Essentially, let me be your guinea pig to see if it is really worth it.

What truly sold me (beyond my curiosity)

  • Sign-up bonus: I have been dreaming of flying business class since I was a little girl, so I have to say the 225,000 bonus (at the time) that would allow me to achieve that was the biggest push over the edge for me
  • Feasibility: I am at a point in my business/travel lifestyle that this kind of card geuinely makes sense with an easy outline of how I can maximise benefits
  • Timing: Between needing furniture/appliance upgrades to move in with my partner and upcoming travel plans, the timing of this was perfect knowing I was guaranteed to hit the bonus spend withint he first 3 months
  • Aligning to my credit card goals: Lounge Access and Points were top priority for me.
  • The best credit card for frequent travellers: Real recommendations and reviews like this.

Every Major American Express Platinum Card Benefit Explained

Airport Lounge Access

This is where the Amex Platinum earns its reputation and first impressions – rightfully so.

The Centurion Lounges, Plaza Premium, and Virgin Australia domestic lounges vary in proper food, real cocktails, showers, and comfort/boujeeness, yet it is ALWAYS better than overspending on airport fast food and fighting for an uncomfortable chair at your gate.

The real cherry on top is the added Priority Pass membership to expand into the world’s largest independent lounge network. Although this one comes with a few hiccups I will get into later.

Travel Insurance

You get travel insurance cover for you, a spouse and dependent children when you book your return trip on the card. That’s Medical, cancellation, baggage and the works.

As always, read the terms carefully as this may not be work or be ‘the works’ for everyone. From a maximum age limit of 79 and pre-existing medical conditions are excluded, but for most travellers this eliminates the need to buy separate travel insurance for every trip.

Hotel Status – what does it really get you

• Complimentary Wi-Fi

Dining Credits

Domestic Dining Credit: AUD 200 + International Dining Credit: AUD 200

What many people don’t realise is that you need to log in to actually add these benefits separately to your card in order for them to work. I would recommend doing so the moment you get the card so you don’t forget down the line.

The benefit ends 31 Dec 2026, and you cannot carry unused credit forward. I would treat it like a use-it-or-lose-it voucher.

The restaurant list is more extensive than I expected and about as expensive as I expected. Let’s just say you will have no problem hitting the $200 for either.

Travel Credit

I LOVE THIS ONE and jumped on it right away. Every year you get $450 to spend on eligible flights, hotels or car hire booked through Amex Travel.

You may read that it comes off your bill automatically, but that doesn’t mean at the time of purchase; it actually works more like cashback as $450 will get refunded into your account not come of your travel cost.

Just make sure to book via the Amex Travel page to trigger the credit.

Sign Up Bonus

This is a true standout for this card with one of the most impressive sign-up bonuses on the market. Keep in mind the offers change slightly throughout the year like the one I had:

Receive 225,000 Bonus Membership Rewards® Points1when you apply online, are approved and spend $5,000 on eligible purchases on your new American Express® Platinum Card within the first 3 months. T&Cs apply. New American Express Card Members only

Check the AMEX website for latest offers.

Membership Rewards Points

This is one of the Amex Platinum’s biggest strengths, with a rate of 2.25 points per $1 on most eligible purchases (1 point per $1 on government spend). Points can be transferred to a range of airline partners, or you can redeem points for gift cards/shopping. You bet I am saving mine for Business or First Class flights.

Pre-sale and other offers

While the Wiggles or Benson Boone weren’t necessarily concerts I was rushing for anyway, it is a perk to get exclusive pre-sale and special events as an Amex Member.

The Major Amex Australia Platinum Changes in 2026 – are they bad or good?

I was flooded with posts and articles about how many red flags there were with major changes to platinum benefits, yet every time I looked deeper into it, a lot of those ‘cons’ really seemed like pros to me…

Yes, if you are a family or regular group traveller, you may take a hit with guest numbers being cut down to 1 for most lounges and the annual fee jumped up from $1200 to $1450 which to me means:

  • There will be more availability in lounges and their facilities (showers!!!)
  • I only ever travel solo or with my partner so the lounge access is the same.
  • I never paid for the old fee so it wasn’t a huge jump up in comparison
  • The higher fee came with a higher welcome bonus, which was my main goal!

Best of all, from October 2026, proposed Australian payment reforms are expected to ban debit card surcharges and significantly reduce or remove many credit card surcharges. If implemented, this could make using an American Express card cheaper than ever at participating merchants, improving the overall value of the card for everyday spending.

So is the $1450 Amex Platinum Annual Fee really worth it?

Here’s how I see it: Once you use the $450 travel credit and $400 dining credit every year, it sets the leftover annual fee around $600 (not to far off its aussie credit card competitors). HOWEVER, thats not all..

From here you can balance out your value breakdown… when you get unlimited lounge access across 1,550 locations worldwide, automatic hotel status upgrades, 2.25 points per $1 on everyday spend, comprehensive family travel insurance, and usually a hefty welcome bonus, most frequent travellers will be able to get way more than $1450 worth of value out of this card

Putting the Australian Amex Platinum to the test; My brutally honest review

What is the Australian Amex Platinum sign-up really like

Most of my time was spent tossing up what my credit card priorities were and actually comparing what card would suit me best yet even when I finally decided on the platinum, I was still unsure if they would think I suit them.

After all, the sign up process and acceptance system is a bit of a mystery in the Australian scene. And although I can say my confirmation came within a matter of minutes without the need to link further banking details, I still can not help give that questions a clear answer.

The spiral of setting up my accounts

I was so excited to get my card approved and delivered so soon, as it meant it arrived just in time prior to our next trip. Beyond the usual card activation, I expected to be good to go, alas, I kept discovering new things that needed to be saved, set or calls to make worth flagging:

  • HOTEL LOYALTY UPGRADES ARE NOT AUTOMATIC: You need to manually link all of your memberships and their corresponding numbers for the upgrade to process. The timing of these tier upgrades varies across programs so do not expect your benfits right away.
  • YOU NEED TO CALL TO GET PRIORITY PASS: Don’t expect to waltz into any lounge you want, you need to call up the Amex Travel line to process your membership. Yes it is complimentary as a platinum member but you need to know that it is technically a different membershipt hat will take about 3 weeks for you to get the new card for.
  • SAVE YOUR TRAVEL/DINING CREDITS: Go on a deep dive once you get your amex account. Here you will find your offers where you need to manually ‘save to card’ each offer you want to use including dining credits for them to process once you plan to use them.

The reality of AMEX lounge access

Setting the Priority Pass aside, there is a large range of Plaza Premium and Centurion lounges to keep you more than looked after on your travel around the world. Even our multiple stopovers in Hong Kong gave us several lounge options to make the most of.

However, these transits happened to land at a peak time so not only did we miss of out on showers as they were fully booked BUT there wasn’t even a regular seat for us to relax on. This is where these upcoming guest restrictions changes feel like a real positive to me as it will open up way more availability and opportunity.

The Travel Booking System is a bit rubbish…

Not many people know that I am also a qualified travel agent so I am a sucker for a good booking platform. I will spend hours on Klook, Booking.com and even ,Google Flights but a few minutes trying to search for hotels on Amex Travel was driving me crazy.

Pages would time out and the website blocks you from opening multiple tabs, making my usual round of hotel comparisons a real challenge.

To be honest, I think this will come with expereince and taking more time to get used to the platform as well as a mix of sticking to my usual travel sites, especially when it comes to something like finding unique hotels in Japan or overtourism swaps.

How much value I was able to realistically get from my Australia Amex Platinum in the first 3 months

SIGN UP BONUS: 225,000 points
TOTAL POINTS: 237,000 points (sign up + everyday send)
LOUNGES USED: 7
TRAVEL CREDIT USED: $450
HOTEL BENEFITS: 3x hotel stay early check-in, late check-out, room upgrade perks

My Amex Platinum Q&A

What benefits do I actually use on the Amex Platinum?

My goal is to truly maximise every part of this card, and I was impressed with how far it took me even within the first month of having it. Mind you, it helped to be at a high-spend time of year for me with travel plans ready to lock in/pre booked that we could upgrade with the lounge access and hotel perks.

What Amex Platinum benefit surprised me the most?

The Hotel loyalty program upgrades! Being able to check in early or out late has given out travel schedule way more flexibility and freedom.

What Amex Platinum benefits do I rarely use?

I can’t see myself using the pre-sale all that much as I am not an avid concert-goer at the best of times.

Would I pay the annual fee again?

Honestly, I am not sure at this stage, given a huge reason I justified the large annual fee was the sign-up bonus. I will keep you updated as the bonuses update!

Is the Amex Platinum worth it Australia for travel creators and frequent travellers?

Out of all of the cards I rummaged through, this still feels the most targeted specifically to travel creators and frequent flyers.

How Does It Differ From Other Credit Cards?

The major difference is that it isn’t a typical credit card, its actually a CHARGE CARD where it doesn’t have a pre-set spending limit, instead, paying your balance in full each month.. Your spending capacity will still vary based on things like your payment history, income and financial profile calculated from your application.

So is the Amex Platinum still worth it in Australia in 2026

Ultimately, you are the only one who can decide if it is worth it for you.

With so many varied benefits, changes, bonuses, use-cases and general financial situations we each have, this is a decision I highly encourage you to take the time and work out how it aligns for you – good and/or bad.

For me, I am confident this was the right card for me at this time of my life, given my travel frequency has increased, I have higher demand for early/late hotel checks, and it came right when I had purchases I needed to make anyway.

Not to mention as a frequent traveller with a chronic illness, the lounge access is a genuine lifesaver that has made the high annual fee well worth the splurge.

So once again I will leave you with this to consider:

✅ This card is for you if…

🛫 You fly internationally at least twice a year
🏨 You stay in hotels and want free upgrades and late checkouts
🍽️ You will use the travel + dining credits every year
✈️ Live out your points hacking dreams
👫 You travel with a partner and want to share the benefits
🛡️ You want comprehensive travel insurance without buying it separately

❌ Give this card a miss if…

😴 You travel once a year or less
💳 You can’t reliably clear the balance every month
🎒 You don’t want a card with high annual fee
🤷 The travel and dining credits are not accessible for you
✈️ You’re loyal to a single airline and just want their card instead
💰 You want a simple, low-fee rewards card without the commitment

How I can share a friend referral link is limited so as much as I would love to give you a cheeky bonus while also getting a little top-up myself, I am genuinely excited to dive deeper into the world of points hacking and bring you along for the wild ride.

As always, if you have any questions or stories of your own to share, do not hesitate to email me at wanderingdonut@gmail.com or slide in my @wanderingdonut DMs

Like what points ‘hack’ should I try next!?
